I'm new to Bible study, and can't offer much, but Catholic dogmas like the Papacy just don't have Scripture to back them up. The same with the perpetual virginity of Mary, mass, and so on. Indeed Catholics twist select verses to 'fit' their views, and to make their lies believable they go so far as to say the Pope is inerrant when explaining Scripture (a dogma also achieved through twisting verses). The Catholic church says if you don't believe what they say (their dogmas) then you are destined for hell. Hmm. OK, so imagine you gave a Bible to someone who has no idea what the Catholic church is. From reading the entire Bible it is utterly impossible for that person to even KNOW about these supposedly saving dogmas since Scripture backs none of them up. That suggests that the Bible is not enough to save a person, which contradicts many of the passages in it.
Why would God give us the Bible if it is useless without that additional material proposed by Popes? And if you accepted these additions which, as James points out, first came into being in the 300's, then what do you make of the final verses of Revelation which warn against anybody who adds or takes away from the Bible? If a Catholic thinks he can add stuff then that presumes that God lied in those verses, which contradicts the verse which says God is incapable of lying.
To believe the Catholic viewpoint is to believe in human knowledge being necessary to understand the Bible rather than God (as if God failed in being coherent, and without human intervention, we're all doomed). But the exact middle verse of the Bible is Psalm 118:8 "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man."

Hmmm I think you are wrong to a degree
"The Catholic church says if you don't believe what they say (their dogmas) then you are destined for hell"
What?
"From reading the entire Bible it is utterly impossible for that person to even KNOW about these supposedly saving dogmas since Scripture backs none of them up. That suggests that the Bible is not enough to save a person, which contradicts many of the passages in it."
I see that just giving people Bibles they have come with all sort of things
"And if you accepted these additions which, as James points out, first came into being in the 300's, then what do you make of the final verses of Revelation which warn against anybody who adds or takes away from the Bible? "
Goof grief not the Catholic Inventions candard again
Well, shoot. Looks like we have readers. Sorry, I didn't see your comment until now.
Its hard to word things so folks don't get bent out of shape, and this is one of those areas that we weren't planning to go with this blog - because several of the guys on the Guy's Fellowship are Catholic. Its just that several more are from Scotland and Ireland and that debate is still hot over there. This was originally posted by one of the fellas from Edinburgh.
For debate sake though, for all involved, if we are going to make any statements as profound as have been in these adjoining posts, we must back them up. With Scripture if possible. That isn't always possible, but if we can...
That includes for rebuttals. "Hmmm I think you are wrong to a degree..." (and he may be) but we are looking for how it is wrong. Be specific.
Now, granted, the Papacy is a long going dispute between Catholics and Protestants. Both would agree that there have been bad Popes, sure. But both, if asked, are most likely to tell you the head of the church is Jesus. That isnt the issue.
I HAVE been told that I am going to hell if I don't hold to their dogmas - but I wouldn't go so far as to say that was church policy on the matter.
No one said you should just hand out Bibles without also providing teaching in it. The Bible is fairly straight forward though. God's Word is sufficient, and baring any interference from false teaching, eg Mormons, people tend to come to Jesus on their own.
And for the Catholic Inventions candard (is that supposed to be canard?)... well, again, lets be specific.
That means everyone posting and commenting. This is not an argument forum though. Anything that isn't edifying (and this post almost falls under that) will be removed.
